ABSTRACT:
Disk drives consume a significant amount of power and consequently place a considerable load on the cooling resources in large data centers. The type of disk drive and associated packaging play a key role in minimizing the energy required to store and access data in these environments. Atrato has developed a data storage system that exploits the low power characteristics of 2.5-inch disk drive technology that allows for:
- Ultra-high-density packaging: 160 disk drives per 3U enclosure
- Extremely low power consumption: 450 watts idle, 750 watts 100% active
- Minimal cooling: ~5°C thermal gradient front to back
This novel approach to "green" data storage is unique in the industry and proving to provide the performance, capacity, and packaging density inside a single solution.
